The Renaissance (Xhequan, lit. "To be reborn") known as the Enlightenment in Atraeth, Estoil and Pegard, was a cultural movement that began in Amlei and flowed through to northern Cymlun from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and is regarded as the cultural bridge between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era. Starting as an artistic movement in the nations of northern Amlei - specifically Mahlerand and Baroula - and later the Knight-Ducassy of Etruarand, it later spread across the continent as a blossoming of humanist thought and scientific progress. The Renaissance incited great social upheaval as the power of the clergy waned and the bourgeois grew in influence, this marking the decline of feudalism, the rise of secularism, and a transformation of kingdoms into more centralised, identifiable nation states.
