The Etruarac Crusades or Northern Crusades, were a series of holy wars undertaken by the Astralist Etruarac Order against the animist Ewigic tribes of Northwestern Amlei. It is likely the term crusade was not used to describe these wars during the middle ages, but were rather dubbed as such by romantic nationalist historians of 18th century Etruarand. The Etuarac Crusades dramatically shifted the balance of power in northern Amlei, solidifying the Etuarac Order as a political power in their own right, seeing the expansion of Mahlerand and marking the beginning of Astralist aggression and dominance of the continent.
The various Ewigic beliefs became virtually extinct after these campaigns, as the native populations were displaced, assimilated and sometimes exterminated by the Etuarac invaders, the brutal mistreatment of the defeated Ewigic people gave a fearful reputation to the Etruarac Knight and laid the seeds of Necrist resistance to Astralist expansion centuries later during more major crusades of the era. The Etruarac Crusades preceded the Etruarac-Mahlerand Wars, a series of conflicts that would continue on for centuries as the two powers clashed over control of the Cangils peninsula.
Background[edit | edit source]
The starting point of the Etruarac Crusades was the formation of the Knight-Ducassy of Etruarand by royal decree from the Crown of Mordras in 798. After being given sizable landed titles on the oath that they would remain loyal to the Crown and subjugate the heathen Ewigic peoples, Ducassor Jacques I wasted no more time than needed in setting up the infrastructure of the new nation and in 802 officially declared war on the kingdom of Cedrad. Expecting a quick and complete victory over all the Ewigic kingdoms within two decades, the Crusades devolved into a long series of bloody campaigns, uprisings, exterminations and skirmishing that took ravaged the region for over a century.
