The Etruarac Republic (Etruarac: Ρεπυβλισα Ετρυαρανδ, tr. Republisa Etruarand, pronounced ?/ɛ.ˌtruː.ər.ˈɑːnd/ or /ɛ.ˈtruː.ənd/), commonly referred to as Etruarand, is a federal republic of 28 states located in Amlei, and a waning colonial power with extensive global influence. The homeland territory of the modern Republic has been bordered by Mahlerand, Pelannica, Eflela, Cossica, Cleonia, Soleim, Freasiea, Legrena and Amulna. From 1999, the nation also borders the nation of Ewigland, a nation freed from Etruarac control in the wake of the civil rights movement. Its colony of Etruarac Urcinne shared formerly shared a border with Makrisa before its joint partition between Etruarand and Oymlunei after the Second World War. Etruarac South Amlei shares a border with Iqualna and the United Kingdoms, and the remaining islands of Etruarac Gashaorhiel still ruled by the Republic share a maritime border with the now independent former Etruarac colony of Gashaorhiel.
Since the enlightenment had first seeded itself in Etruarand in in the sixteenth century, the nation has been the beating heart of the global transition of feudalism to capitalism, and in the wake of the proclamation of the Etruarac Republic in 1791, has risen to become the epicentre of republicanism and democracy, becoming the first nation amongst many in the world to fully shrug off the feudal order of old, ascending the bourgeoisie to the position of ruling class, and paving the road for the future industrial revolution to sweep across most of the developed world.
Until the Great Crash of 1890, Eturarand had for almost a hundred years sat comfortably as the world's chief colonial power, largest economy, and leader in military. Its recent economic collapse and the loss of its colonial possession of Makrisa locking it out of competing with the Inner Sea trade monopolies had hit the nation at its core, allowing it to be bested by the rising global power of Atraeth, however in spite of this weakening the nation has remained strong in the long term, and has until the present date remained as the penultimate world power.

Governance[edit | edit source]
Etruarand is a federal parliamentary democracy. Its legislative branch is bicameral, divided into the House of Judges (i.e. upper house) and the House of Governors (i.e. lower house), collectively known by the colloquial title of the Two Houses. The Etruarac government is based on the principles of federalism and republicanism, in which power is shared between the federal government and state governments. The Etruarac legislature is known as the Etruarand System, characterised by two main rows of seats reserved for the two main parties and a number of cross-benchers seats between the two reserved for minor parties and independents.
The House of Judges is comprised of 56 seats, with two Judges for each of the 28 states. The House of Governors is comprised of 250 seats. The number of seats has not been historically fixed, and has varied with population growth, with the number of state representatives increasing on a gradual basis since the house's foundation in 1791. Both houses are popularly elected; Judges serve 6 year terms, whereas governors serve for 3 years.

During the World Wars, the Etruarac parliament was dominated by its key founding party, the Federal Party (FED), the now defunct National Party (NAT), and the Liberal Party (LIB). The Federal Party has since its foundation strongly advocated for federalism and state capitalism, with its protectionist policies and history of granting social reform (historically forced more by popular movements than by the party itself) earning it a notable working class vote. The National Party represented the interests of the agrarian elite during the 17th and 18th centuries before the rise of mechanised agriculture and the rise of opposition to slavery - which the party adamantly supported - diminished its voter base. The Liberal Party established itself as an advocate for free market capitalism and less government intervention, and rose to prominence after the industrial boom of the 19th century, and has made a history of advocating policies to protect personal freedoms and remove restrictive laws earning it a traditionally middle class vote.
Other parties that have held significant numbers of seats are the Astralist Union Party (AUP) and the Etruarac Labour Party (ELP). The Astralist Union Party is a party founded on the traditional values of Astralism, however has relied heavily on populism to gain votes, with its positions on various issues shifting with the times. A few of its members have gone on record for astounding political incorrectness, with one notable example being the Governor Emerson Paklos referring to native Urcinnan Etruarac citizens as "...darkies from bongo land" (sic), earning the party a wide degree of ridicule from the liberal establishment, and a plea against censorship in the name of free speech from the conservative press. The Etruarac Labour Party is a political party founded and run by the Trade Unions Council of Etruarand, and was created in 1899 on the back of the defeat of a major wave of strikes. The Labour Party is renowned for having staunchly left-wing positions on many issues, including advocating for universal suffrage and higher wages, and is thoroughly anti-war. Its key trade union bureaucrat membership is - like all trade union bureaucracies on one way or another - often pulled much further leftwards than what it would deem comfortable due to pressure from the rank and file of the union movement.
In the decade following the Second World War the Federal Party shrunk to near irrelevance, having earned itself a warmongering reputation during the two wars. In the vaccum created, the Labour party grew massively in its influence. It remained as a traditional social democratic party until the early 1980's, where a new neoliberal tendency within the party grew in its strength where it could effectively overtake the old, re-defining Labour as essentially a more liberal Liberal party. This new Labour would prove fruitless during the Civil Rights Movement, with its failure to provide a proper reformist alternative to the movement laying the basis for mass revolutionary currents to sweep the nation.
