A template is a MediaWiki page created to be included in other pages. Templates usually contain repetitive material that might need to show up on any number of articles or pages. They are commonly used as boilerplates for messages, warnings, notices, infoboxes, navigational boxes, and similar purposes.

Core templates are templates that are used in other templates to expand and streamline their functionality, and aren't used in standard articles. They can be freely used to create a new addition to a series, or to create new template with similar functionality to other templates that use the same core.
