The Issue of Amulndian Succession[edit | edit source]
The Amulndian Empire dominated the northern territories of Amlei and Cymlun for a little over five centuries, completely reshaping the geopolitical makeup of the two continents through rapid expansionism. The legacy of the empire is one so significantly ingrained in the cultural consciousness of the states that came after it that it has shaped religion, policy and even time keeping, with the fall of the great empire being considered the first year of the synonomous Amulndian Calendar. Thus the issue of succession is one stepped in disputation, for many nations seek to claim the prestigious title.
The primary three powers that contest the succession, each claiming to be the true successor state of the Amulndian Empire, are the: Grand Ducassy of Amulna, Caeserlic Republic of Atraeth and Virassian Republic.
Amulna[edit | edit source]
Amulna formed from the split of the nation of Mordras into two Ducassies following disputed succession of the crown between the twin sons of its previous Grand Ducassor, with the origin of the term Amulna being accredited to documentation from the 6th Century CE. Amulna holds what is arguably the strongest hereditary claim to the succession. Apparently guided by the faith, an exodus into the Great Wildlands began following the collapse of the empire, with many ethnic Amulndians participating in the mass migration. It should be noted that the first Astralist teachings depict the Amulndian Empire as corrupt and bloated, with the incitement to leave brought upon by a moral impetous instilled into the faithul as a means of escaping the decadence. Revisionism by Amulnan theologians centred around the celebration of the historic empire in place of condemnation would be but one of the causes of the infamous Disesnea-Lyniela Schism of the late 5th Century CE. While shunning their legacy for more than five hundred years, the romanticism of Imperial Amulndian history would lead to them reclaiming the old name and increasingly adopting more of the classical customs that had been previously outlawed.
Atraeth[edit | edit source]
The origins of Atraeth lie in that of the Imperial Province of Atraedia (now modern day Lower Asthuumry, Estoil and Pegard), which remained in a coherent form as a warlord state for six centuries following the collapse of the Amulndian Empire. This gives it the strongest claim in terms of perpetuity, as a direct line of succession exists from Atraedia, to West Atraedia (now modern day Lower Asthuumry and Pegard) following the Atraedian Civil Wars in 600 CE, to the Kingdom of Atraeth (now compromising the entirety of Atraeth Proper, the Province of Pyorencia and the nation states of Estoil and Pegard). Throughout these phases the Arms of the Amulndian Empire have been represented wthin their official heraldry and latterly upon their national flags. Amulndian culture has always been embraced within Atraeth but the issue arises over the faith as Reformed Igniscism is a far cry away from the Amulndian Polytheism of old.
