The Moon is the sole large natural satellite that orbits the planet Earth. It was possibly formed 4500 million years ago when a planet referred to as "Theia" collided with the young Earth, decimating the planet's surface and ejecting a vast number moonlets into orbit around the young Earth. These moonlets would eventually coalesce to form a singular orbiting body.

The moon is responsible for the tides, stabilising Earth's orbit and thus keeping temperatures at habitable levels, and illuminating the night sky. Many human religions focus on the moon and its cycles, and scientists and priests have studied it for millennia.
