Grammar[edit | edit source]

Main article: Virassian grammar

Virassian is a semi-inflected analytical language that has evolved away from the synthetic structure typical of Upcylmu-Amleian languages in a manner parallel to Atraelish. The remnants of its collapsed morpheme structure are littered throughout the language's wordstock resulting in a large vocabulary, with various sound changes obscuring the once orderly system of vowel change and harmony that has otherwise survived in other languages such as Amulni and Mordrasi. The language also exhibits a degree of influence from Ewigic languages, specifically old Visser.

Alphabet[edit | edit source]

Virassian is written with the Virassic alphabet, which was modelled on the Etruaran alphabet in the early 4th century.

Regional variation[edit | edit source]

Regional variation for Virassian is defined primarily by differences in vowel pronunciation and a distinction between rhotic and non-rhotic accents. Though different regions have various merged and split vowels and different rhoticity, the two most widely recognised Virassian accents are Belessian, spoken in the east of the nation (including the city of Misomkh) and Midwestern, characterised primarily by the Virassian spoken in St. Engelkea. The Belessian accent is non-rhotic, and is distinguished by its larger variety of vowels as a result of several splits, whereas Midwestern is rhotic and has a smaller variety of vowels.
