Juotsou Hou-gemgun (Seonmi: ㄐㄝㄒㄡㄧㄏㄡㄧㄍㄜㄇㄍㄨㄋ; pronunciation [ˈʑɯo.tsoɯ ˌxoɯ.ˈɡem.ɡɯn]; Atraelish pronunciation ?/dʒuː.ˈɒ.tsoʊ hoʊ.ˈɡɛm.ɡʊn/; born 17th March 1863) was a prominent Seonmi military strategist the ruler of Saeyri during the First and Second World Wars, ascending to the position of rulership following the ousting of his eldest brother, Kutsumo Kai, by the Seonmi Royal Guard. The fourth son of the penultimate King of the Kingdom of Saeyri, Hou-gemgun grew up wanting for nothing within the walls of the Limestone Palace and likewise expected nothing as he was not destined to rule. Finding an affinity for strategy at a young age, Hou-gemgun enrolled in the Seonmi Officer's College in Kaitan at 16 where he would be trained in the art of war in preparation for a lifetime of service within the Seonmi Self Defense Forces.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Described by critics and supporters alike as a ruthless pragmatist, Joutsou associated only with those who could further his own interests. Even his marriage to a low-born woman has latterly been considered a cynical maneuver designed to disinherit himself from the throne in order to legitimize his attempt at a republican coup and appeal to his working class support base. Supporters ascribe his strategic approach to life to his devout Seonsol beliefs coupled with a rigid military upbringing.

Described in his own words, Juotsou was a lucky opportunist who made the most of the hand he was dealt in life and had fun doing it. He cites Charles Giffard as an inspiration for his latter ruthless pragmatism expressing a fondness for the Atraelish Model. In the same book he calls Sulejman Lukanov a dear friend and invaluable mentor, claiming that he learned much from the man during an undocumented visit to Odokcraca in the 1890s. Critics dismiss his autobiography as propaganda designed to humanize a war criminal while even some of his supporters believe him to be an unreliable narrator based on the numerous self-contradictions littered throughout the piece.

Ideology[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

In adulthood, Juotsou Hou-gemgun maintained a fairly average build, with flat unremarkable facial features typical of ethnic kuosi. His skin was paler than most Seonmi, a feature typical of the upper classes and especially characteristic of descendants of the Kutsumo Dynasty. In tandem with the shrugging off of his royal heritage, Juotsou assumed a modern western appearance, sporting a faint moustache and keeping his hair cut short and finely combed. When not in uniform, Juotsou was normally seen wearing suits of a common character, preferring not to adorn himself in the kind of high-quality suits and ties typical of Atraelish state officials.
