“ | The reason the right grows is because through the course of months they build up more and more confidence to spit their filth in public with no fear of criticism or meaningful opposition. All the soft racists are soon convinced by the hard ones, after all these racists seem to be kicking up a fuss about a really important issue and nobody appears to have any alternative. Bullshit. There is an alternative, we just need to make it seen. | ” |
–Josephson, in Four Accounts of Struggle, January 1892 |
Perrie Josephson was a revolutionary anarcho-syndicalist and member of the Syndicalist Republican Alliance who served as a student revolutionary and later a Grey Guard militia during the Virassian Civil War.
History[edit | edit source]
Personality[edit | edit source]
To his family, most of his peers at university, and later many of the colleagues of his working life, Josephson was frequently in the margins of what was considered respectable, with many regarding him as naïve and unintelligent. Because of his well-off upbringing, others often expected him to be proudly conservative in his political views and gentlemanly in demeanour, however he was instead a delinquent with a hostile relationship with many others of his social class. His years of schooling saw frequent disciplinary actions, numerous suspensions, and one expulsion from the elite Lensua Boys' Grammar School. During the later years of schooling and his entry into University, Josephson's aimless troublemaking transformed into a rush of political activity, as he found himself convinced of anarchist, anti-capitalist politics, a position galvanised after meeting fellow anarchist Dȥorge Proud at a 1890 rally for universal suffrage.
To his friends (most of whom were made later in his life on political bases), Josephson was respected for his confidence, humility, and seething hatred of upper class culture and ideas, as well as his well-readness fuelling an inspiring ability to respond effectively to political challenges and developments. Though he was short on experiences of oppression that he could relate to to sharpen his political conviction, a tendency that often made him come off as ignorant or lacking of empathy when he talked politics, Josephson was to the end thoroughly convinced of the need to fight against the system and for the rights of all oppressed groups, and consistently analysed and related to his experiences through the lens of what he had read.
Ideology[edit | edit source]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Josephson's complexion was typical of that of Western Amulndian Pyorencians, with light brown skin, dark brown eyes, and rounded facial features. Defining characteristics included pock marks on both cheeks and a larger than average nose. Attire-wise, Josephson was typically seen wearing modest blazers and hats, and typically eschewed more expensive items of clothing despite his comfortably well-off class position out of political conviction and a general personal disdain for most others of the upper middle classes.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Perrie Josephson maintained a close friendship with Dȥorge Proud throughout much of his life, with Dȥorge being responsible for politicising Perrie and convincing him of anti-capitalist, anarchist politics.
